Tips on Designing a Minimalist Bathroom

The term “minimalism” is often lumped in the same box as “barren” and “clinical,” but minimalist spaces are all about creating an uncluttered space. Bathrooms are perfect for minimalist designs because, in addition to prioritizing function, uncluttered spaces are conducive to relaxation. In today’s post, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Southeast Florida shares tips on minimalism that you can apply on your next bathroom remodel.

Use Texture for Contrast

Monochromatic color palettes are a staple of minimalist design. While variations in tint, shade and tone can create visual interest, you can get more interesting results with variations in texture. A contrasting combination of materials — stone and wood against a painted wall, for example — all add depth and make an otherwise singular palette far more interesting.

Less Frames, More Glass

Traditional partitions and enclosures can make the bathroom look smaller, as well as contribute to visual clutter. This makes all-glass enclosures and frameless shower doors ideal for a minimalist bathroom, as they’re durable yet virtually invisible.

Choose a Focal Point

A focal point can be anything: a freestanding bathtub, an antique vanity, or a window with a view, to name a few examples. Focal points are supposed to draw the viewer’s eyes, but in the context of a minimalist bathroom, it needs to be something simple but captivating.

Use Simple Lighting Fixtures

A simple pendant light combined with sconces, when strategically placed, would be perfect in a minimalist bathroom. Simple lighting also leverages mirrors in the bathroom, as their reflective surfaces can be used to full effect.

Install Wall-Mounted Fixtures

Wall-mounted toilets and sinks free up precious floor space, which can further reinforce a decluttered look. They also help make the bathroom floor easier to clean. It’s important to note that wall-mounted fixtures will require changes to existing plumbing, which can impact your remodeling budget and timeline.
