4 Whole-Home Remodeling Pitfalls To Watch Out For

A whole-home remodel is far more complex than a typical kitchen or bathroom remodeling project, which means you have to be more careful of mistakes and problems that can derail it. In today’s post, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Southeast Florida discusses remodeling pitfalls that you should watch out for.

  1. Ignoring structural issues. Your project needs to have good bones to build on. This means, unless changes to the framing is part of the plan, you and your remodeler have to make sure that there are no structural issues. Hidden issues such as mold and moisture damage, as well as plumbing and electrical issues, need to be fixed before remodeling work can begin. Ignoring them will only result in greater repair costs down the line.
  2. Not securing financing. Whether it’s cabinet resurfacing or whole-home remodeling, a well-planned budget can save you from making compromises in the middle of a project…or abandoning it altogether. If cash or credit is not an option, financing options like secured loans (which include refinancing and HELOC) are available.
  3. Making changes to the project halfway. There are many reasons why a homeowner would change their mind halfway through the project. While it’s not impossible to make such changes, they’re never easy to execute. For example, changing the flooring material may involve pausing the project and reordering new material, which can prolong the project timeline. If the flooring is partially installed, then there’s the matter of undoing all of the work. All of this will impact the project cost depending on how much of the project is already done. During the planning stage, use all available resources, including visualization software, to make sure that you’re 100% happy with the project before greenlighting it.
  4. Not hiring a remodeling contractor. Contractors can specialize on certain projects. General contractors can take on virtually any project, but they may be lacking in certain areas like working with complex designs. Exterior contractors typically focus on exteriors like roofing and siding. With a whole-home remodel, it’s best to work with contractors that have actual experience with interior remodeling. In comparison, interior remodelers have the insight that helps create cohesive spaces. Design-build remodelers are an even better choice because they can work on your project from the design stage, all the way to completion.
