How to Save Money on Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchen cabinets take up a significant portion of a kitchen’s remodeling cost, and it only makes sense to find ways where you can save money without compromising your remodeling plans. In today’s post, local home remodeling contractor DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Southeast Florida shares how you can get the best value for your kitchen cabinets.

Consider a More Streamlined Cabinet Design

Ornate cabinet doors require more time and labor to the commission, which can raise the overall cost of your kitchen cabinets. While streamlined or “clean” designs are usually associated with contemporary kitchens — which means you already have this base covered if you were planning a contemporary kitchen all along —  the right finish can help it blend into a kitchen with a traditional design.

Reface the Cabinets

Many people and remodelers consider cabinet refacing as the best way of breathing new life to existing kitchen cabinets. Cabinet refacing involves removing the cabinet doors and replacing them with new ones that match the rest of the kitchen design. The cabinet boxes can be repainted or refinished to better fit with the kitchen’s new look.

It’s important to note the difference between cabinet refacing and refinishing. While refacing involves replacing everything other than the cabinet boxes, refinishing involves applying a new finish or veneer on existing cabinet doors. Refinishing may cost less, but it’s akin to painting your kitchen cabinets: it doesn’t allow room for changes to the cabinet door styles, nor does it allow structural repairs.

Choose an Affordable Wood Species

Choosing the right wood species can help reduce the costs of building a new cabinet. Many homeowners would choose cherry as the ideal species for building cabinets. However, it is a costly option, and it wouldn’t matter much if your kitchen design calls for painted cabinets. Consider choosing species like oak or hickory: they’re strong, durable, and do not cost as much as “premium” types of wood.
