3 Great Ideas for Your Next Home Addition

A home addition is a smart investment that can increase your livable square footage while boosting your property’s overall value. If you are planning to tackle this project soon, you must first find inspiration. Local home remodeling contractor DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of SE Florida shares three great ideas to consider for your next home addition.

1. Mudroom

A mudroom addition is a handy way to store and organize your shoes, coats, backpacks and other similar items in one space. Wall hooks are a staple in this area of your home, and so are floor-to-ceiling cabinets with shelving. This particular storage type is ideal if you want your valuables to remain out of sight and ensure the whole mudroom doesn’t look cluttered. You can also incorporate lockers or cubbies to enhance storage further.

2. Expanded Kitchen or Bathroom

A kitchen or bathroom remodel, even on a minor scale, can provide a great return on investment. Either space can benefit from a bump-out addition or a small extension as small as two feet or as large as 10 to 15 feet. The extra space offers numerous possibilities, including a walk-in pantry for the kitchen or a soaking tub for the bathroom.

3. Finished Attic

The attic provides unlimited potential in terms of utility. Before you start this project, however, you must first consider local building codes. An attic must have at least 70 square feet of floor space and a minimum width of seven feet. Also, at least half of the space must have a ceiling height of seven feet or higher to allow occupants to stand up and move around. More importantly, get an engineer to inspect your home’s foundation and framing to ensure it can support the extra load.
